Advanced student support tools for open and distance education students: example of Anadolu University hashtag-based frequently asked question system

Eskişehir Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences, founded in 1958, is the foundation of Anadolu University. The Academy was replaced by Anadolu University in 1982, which has gained a well-deserved place as a modern, dynamic and innovative institution among the largest universities not only in Turkey, but also in the world. Situated in the centre of Eskişehir, which is well-known as a city of science, culture and youth, the two campuses house 17 faculties (undergraduate level) - three of which offer distance education, 3 applied schools – one of which is of music and drama, 4 vocational schools (associate level), 9 graduate schools – five of which are graduate and postgraduate level, and 30 research centres. Anadolu University has taken many firsts. Most of important of these is the success of implementing the distance education system. Today, the total number of students of the three distance education faculties is over 2 million. The success in the development of this system has been taken as a model for many institutions in various countries.

La Escuela Eskişehir de Ciencias Económicas y Comerciales, fundada en 1958, es el origen de la Universidad de Anadolu. La Escuela fue reemplazada por la Anadolu University en 1982, ganándose un merecido lugar como una institución moderna, dinámica e innovadora entre las universidades más grandes, no sólo en Turquía, sino también en el mundo. Situada en el centro de Eskisehir (reconocida como una ciudad de la ciencia, la cultura y la juventud), sus dos campus albergan 17 facultades (nivel pregrado), tres de las cuales ofrecen educación a distancia y tres aplicadas (una de ellas de música y teatro); cuatro escuelas de formación profesional (nivel asociado), 9 escuelas de postgrado (cinco de las cuales son de grado y de postgrado) y 30 centros de investigación. La Anadolu University ha desarrollado muchas iniciativas innovadoras. Lo más importante de estas es el éxito en la implementación del sistema de educación a distancia. Hoy en día, el número total de estudiantes de las tres facultades de educación a distancia es de más de 2 millones. El éxito en el desarrollo de este sistema ha sido tomada como modelo por muchas instituciones en varios países.

ABSTRACT


Technology is one of the key concepts in distance education. In the past 30 years the use of ICT has fundamentally changed the practices of open and distance education. In this process, the needs of the open and distance education student has changed as well. Now they need continuously accessible, faster, smart systems to integrate hyper, connectivist learning environments. In order to provide such advance support we should take advantage of current technology. Anadolu University, Open Education System hashtag-based frequently asked question system is considered one of the best examples of advanced student support tools for open and distance education students. In this chapter, use of technology in open and distance education students’ support, Anadolu University, Open Education System with general facts and figures, programs, services and rates, hashtag based frequently asked question system discussed with examples, codes and interface designs. Some important recommenda- tions are also provided for open and distance education institutions on building, affectively using and maintaining advanced student support tools for open and distance education students.
